A Meeting with Roots and Wings in a Group Work of Jewish and Arab Citizens of Israel
Dr. Pnina Rappoport and and Mrs. Suzi Shoshani
The workshop will be experiential, and will take place in the village of Ein Rafa, which is located on the way to Jerusalem, opposite Abu Ghosh, adjacent to a number of Jewish settlements (such as Kibbutz Tzova, Mevaseret Zion, Al-Qastal, Shoresh and more). The workshop will also include a number of Arab and Jewish representatives, residents of the area who took part in group analytical work that was conducted by us in 2017–2018 and still do.
Stage AWe will open the workshop with an educational tour and try to explain from historical and geographical perspectives the roots of the two nations, the difficulties and conflicts that arise from this problematic and challenging neighborliness, and the relationships that were built between the Arabs and their Jewish neighbors, all citizens of the State of Israel.
Stage BRelaxation, guided imagination, and sharing in the unique personal history of the workshop participants, their experiences and the process they have undergone, and are still going through, while they try to preserve their roots and heritage, and on the other hand strive to spread wings, to develop and grow, as they build various cooperation between them.
Later in the workshop we will address a number of points:
Questions that underlie this workWill the various nations and societies in Israel (and the world) be able to make peace with each other after all? Will they be able to nourish each other, develop each other, and sprout wide branches – strong and useful wings, and not just focus on differences, conflicts and wars?
As noted, in Ein Rafa, we use group analysis methods to deal with different worldviews of Arabs and Jews living in the same environment, and with difficulties from home and abroad. Emphasis was placed on seeing the other as is and on accepting the other, while providing support for the difficulties of adapting to the changes required from any society (fortified within itself), in finding ways to contain the different other.
Similar approach will be experienced during our pre conference workshop with all participants.
The horizonThe workshop is based on the belief that the combination of the live meeting, as part of the effort to create a dialog between two different societies in the State of Israel, with workshop participants of different views and both similar and different levels of experience, will allow us to expand the scope, to benefit and to contribute to our future therapeutic work with immigration and immigrants.
The workshop will take place on _April 3rd 2019 from 10:00am to 18:00 pm

Later in the workshop we will address a number of points:
- We will note and explain how the group developed the ability to observe and listen to the history of the other and to his personal and family trauma.
- Describe the difficulties of assimilation into another society.
- Show the wish to preserve the known and the familiar, within the existing tribalism, while having a strong desire to resemble and be accepted by the other.
- Discuss and describe how the group acted out as a “mother”, which accepts and includes “her sons” (its participants), allowing and offering them ways to realize the dream (a process of reverie).
